12 Days of CHRISTmas

Every year, we read the book "12 Days of Christmas: The Story Behind a Favorite Christmas Song" by Helen C. Haidle.  You can buy it here.  When I attended a MOPS group in VA, we had a mentor mom share a tradition that they started leading up to Epiphany using this book.  We have a special box (that is not accessible because it is in storage) that has ornaments that we look at and talk about after reading the corresponding page.  This year, we have had to be a little more creative because it is important to Chris and I to still share the meaning behind this song.  So, please read through the captions on the pictures and learn a little about what the Hootie Hoos are learning.

Making our partridge in a pear tree

We learned that Jesus is like the partridge in a pear tree.  A partridge is a very protective bird and will sacrifice it's life to protect it's young.  Jesus came and died for us on the cross.

Our finished turtle doves.  Even though we have more than two, the two turtledoves remind us of the Old and New Testament.  They also remind us of the offering Mary and Joseph gave at the temple after Jesus was born.

Our finished french hens.  They remind us of the gifts the wise men brought to Jesus.  We talked about how we can use the gifts God has given us.

Four calling birds.  They remind us of the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  We talked about how we are "called" to share the Good News of Jesus.

Five golden rings.  We learned that they remind us of the first five books of the Bible the Pentateuch. The Pentateuch teaches us the foundations of our faith

Six geese a-laying reminds us of the six days of Creation

Seven swans a swimming reminds us of the seven the spiritual gifts found in Romans 12

Eight maids a-milking reminds us of the Beatitudes

He sure enjoyed painting with the chocolate pudding and then eating it
Nine ladies dancing reminds us of the fruit of the Spirit---love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, kindness, self-contol

We made ballet slippers and tutus

Ten lords a-leaping reminds us of the 10 Commandments

Eleven pipers piping remind us of the disciples (minus Judas)

Cutest little piper I know

Twelve drummers drumming remind us of the Apostle's Creed

Really focused and making sure she took her time.
